Chã

chã

Chã Parish still bears evident traces of their continued importance in medieval and classical times. Five of its twelve villages were “visited” by the Roman Road, in XVII of the Antonine Itinerary: Penedones (Santo Aleixo), Travaços, São Vicente, Peireses e Gralhós. Slightly younger than the Roman Route is the “ara” (altar) that was recently found in São Vicente – an evident sign that the hill (altarium) where, centuries before Christianity built the Romanesque temple, where our ancestry worshiped their “Deus Óptimo Máximo” (Good High God).

The same place was also of interest to the Kings of Portugal that offered it as commendation to the nuns of Santa Clara with two adjoining parishes, a total of sixteen villages. The present parish temple is well worthy of the most careful visit due to the patent piece of the Pintos de Donões, proficient of Barroso artists.
