Montalegre occupies the heart of a plateau in the region of Barroso. Its territory’s area is about 805 km2 and is composed by 35 local administrative councils and 136 villages. This region is situated in the northeast slope of the district of Vila Real and is surrounded by the province of Galiza in the north side, by the municipality of Terras de Bouro in the sunset side, by the municipalities of Vieira do Minho and Cabeceiras de Basto in the south side, and by the municipalities of Chaves and Boticas in the sunrise side.
Montalegre is 21, 75 miles far from the Chaves town and 55,92 miles far from the t Braga own . The road that takes us to this last town offers us singular beauties once it surrounds the Cabreira Mountain that is surrounded by the wonderful cliffs of the Gerês National Park, and which offers us a wonderful image of the ground waters of the lagoons in the Cávado and Rabagão rivers.
The Barroso region is situated in the Galician/Dourian massif and is surrounded by the Gerês National Park (4.691,60 ft high) in the West side, by the Larouco Mountain (5.003,28 ft high) in the Northeast side, by the Cabreira Mountain (4.140,42 ft high) in the Southeast side, by the Alturas Mountain (or Barroso) (4.196,19 ft high) in the South side, and by the Leirancos Mountain (3.792,65 ft high) in the Northeast/Southeast side.
